Out of various traditional gifts Japan has given to this world apart from sumo wrestling, martial arts, various kinds of tea and different types of food items, kimonos have been the most popular and have been accepted all over the world with love.

Kimono is an ankle length dress designed to cover the body. It is basically a wrap around but with a style.

Usually the left layer of the kimono is put over the right except for attending burial ceremony where it is right over left. It has a belt which is usually tied at the back.

Kimono depicts the years old culture of Japan. Even in the modern day we can see people on the streets of Japan wearing this beautiful dress.

People usually wear them over official or family occasions, national occasions and religious festivals. It can be a compulsory uniform for some school children in Japan.

Even the sumo wrestlers have to wear kimonos when out in public since it’s a part of their uniform.Kimono has been adopted from Chinese pattern of clothing known as hanfu several hundred years back.

Since then they have been adopted and modified in Japan. Kimonos are available in all different types of fabrics like cotton, nylon, rayon, cotton sateen and polyester which are cheap.

Costlier kimonos could be made from silk, silk brocade, silk crepes and satin like the ones from medieval period Japan. Kimonos are available in different vibrant colors.

One can select the color of choice depending on skin color. In Japan the different color and patterns of the dress are available and the most interesting part is that the kimonos are themed.

The themes depend on the changing season. If you see a lady wearing a kimono with lot of floral designs you may understand that its spring in Japan.

Similarly autumn is depicted by maples leaves and winter with bamboo and pine designs on the kimonos. One may be surprised to know that kimono is being considered to be a high status dress up.
