Originally the meaning of pareo is a wrap around worn over the waist. It is adored by both males and females and is worn in different styles.
Earlier the only dress worn by Tahitians was a pareo, wearing nothing on the top. These days’ women prefer them wrapping the pareo around their upper bodies, covering the waist till the knees.
The dress is basically supported by breasts from slipping down. Where it was not necessary to cover the upper bodies, women used to wear these pareos till the ankle.
It gave an appearance of a long skirt. These days’ women may combine the pareos with a shirt over the top. One can wear these pareos along with a belt to prevent it from slipping down.
Earlier men used to wear pareos as short wrap arounds around their waists which looked like a short skirt. It allowed maximum freedom while doing vigorous hard work like hunting, cutting the trees or dancing. |
