Hand knotted carpets are known as the Indian carpets which are considered to impart a royal look to the entire surrounding. The regions that confined to the making of hand knotted carpets are Khamaria, Bhadohi, Agra, Ghosia, Mirzapur, Varanasi, Amritsar and Pathanjot in Punjab and Jaipur in Rajasthan.

The styles and varieties of each region differ with time as they have unique designs for each region.The hand knotted carpets are referred to as the hard work of the Indian craftsmen who studied from the Persian artifacts as they were the ones that started with this creativity.

Later Indians craftsmen started to produce their own kinds. These hand knotted carpets provide warmth all over and are also available in brilliant colours which makes them stand apart.

The hand knot technique involves knots per square inch of the entire carpet and the most important thing is the quality of these carpets which depends largely on the number of knots present.

These exclusive designs and varieties make them unique and sophisticated and chosen by all for each and every house.Different regions have their own designs and motifs such as Mirzapur, Bhadohi, Ghosia, Khamaria and Varanasi get the influence from Tibetan as well as Budhists motifs whereas Pathankot and Amritsar usually uses geometric mixed with floral designs and Jaipur and Agra are known for their modified Turkish and Persian styles.

For making the hand knotted carpets several steps are involved. First the warp threads are stretch on a loom and the pile is knotted to them. Next the weft thread is inserted into it and the pile is shorn in.

Usually hand knotted carpets are used in wool and for getting better effect the wool is washed with special chemicals. It is estimated that the best Kashmiri carpets have almost 400 knots per square inch.
