One of the oldest carpets which have been still in use that has the same fame and pride are the handloom carpets.

They preserve the same tradition and the method of use that was followed during the olden times.

The same tools and procedures are used in making the handloom carpets. These carpets can also be known as hand knotted carpets. They are available in three varying styles and patterns.

The traditional method of weaving the handloom carpet is on a wooden loom which has cotton warp mounted on it. Instead of cotton warps, in some cases silk warps are also used.

Cotton warps are usually chosen due to their availability and low cost. The cotton which is used varies in the thickness that decides the stiffness of the final product.

The cotton quality prevents the process of weaving to become loose and therefore the shape of the handloom carpet remains the same and strong.

The weaving of silk and woollen carpets uses another technique. The three famous knots that are seen in handloom carpets are the Sneha, Tibetan knots and the Ghiordes out of which the Sneha is the most famous ones.

It is a simple knot which was named after a town in Persia known as Sneha. According to history these carpets were woven there and sometimes they were even woven by artisans of other places.

The hand knots which were popular among the Turks were the Ghiordes. Like the Sneha knot, this name was also originated from the town in Turkey which was popular in weaving handloom carpets.

They are double knots and the neatness they have is much less when compared to single knots.

A third pattern knots which are used to make handloom carpets are the Tibetan knots. In this type the carpet forms a creased style along with the uneven cutting pile. Real hard word has paved way for the success of these carpets!
