Earlier Nepal was not considered to be a place of manufacturing quality carpets. This was in the early 1960s when they produced very few numbers of carpets that was just aiming at the domestic market.

Even then, the carpets produced by them were considered to be of cheap quality or was not of good quality. The better output from the carpet industry was flourished by the Tibetan refugees who initiated the entire procedure for quality Nepalese carpets which were different and had knots that made them unique.

After long years also there have been no change occurred as the carpet belt of Nepal is still located around Katmandu! Earlier patterns for the carpets were taken from the Buddhist arts and also from the motifs. But nowadays the latest motifs have been included to set the trend.

Apart from the Buddhist arts, various designs are also included from the Chinese motifs. The method of production depends on several steps.

First the designs are drawn on the graph and then they are mapped in the loom. In terms of knot density the quality of Nepalese carpets are ranges from low to medium quality.

The knots of the carpets range from 60 to 120 knots per square inch. This is because the base is made of cotton and the piles are made of high quality wool.

The luster of the Nepalese carpets has the same lustre as that of the Tibetan carpets. This similarity is due to the presence of knots in these carpets which are unique to their style and they use quality wools which differ from the Persian carpets.

Persian carpets are very expensive whereas the Nepalese carpets are quite affordable by the common man.

sIt is always very essential to look for the best carpets and always choose them depending on their uniqueness in quality and not in the quantity.
