Wool carpet is the word that suits the best for carpets. Wool carpets were used from the earlier times itself as the common decoration item. Different types of wool are used for making wool carpet which includes goat, sheep, camel etc.

These types differ with the place of origin and the availability. The technique for weaving and the finishes product has its own beauty. There are different qualities of wools that are used to make varying sizes of carpets. For a medium quality carpet, the best quality wools are preferred whereas for very good quality carpets, the finest wools are preferred.

There are different types of wool carpets known which includes kilims, hand knotted carpets, wool dhurrie, hand tufted, designs, namdah and hooked rugs.

Kilims are real woolen flat weaves which has a slit at the place where the pattern starts or ends with a different coloured yarn, originated from Turkey.

Hand knotted carpets were originated from Persia and Turkey and they give a rich feel to the entire room. An Indian counterpart of the kilims is the wool dhurrie which is the traditional flat weaves those woven in most of the Indian families.

Gaps and slits are not created as the colourful yarns are attaching while weaving. Namdah is a kind of felted carpets which assign to Kashmir, Rajasthan and Himachal Pradesh. They are unique type carpet which are colourful and have chain stitch and even appliqué work on it.These carpets originated from Turkey and Persia which are the major place of carpet weaving.Other types of wool carpets are the hand tufted and hooked rugs.

In the former the technique of tufting is employed which evolved in America in1930s which produce coloured carpets with unique style but lesser durability as knots are absent.Whereas in the latter, are made of narrow woolen cloth strips which are brought close by a pointed hook which runs through a canvas foundation which has the design in it.
