Pearl Necklaces

The pearl necklace is a priceless ornament depending on the value of the pearls. The pearl necklace serves a double purpose – draws attention to the wealth and status of the wearer as well as to the curves of the feminine form. However the pearl necklace has not been the sole prerogative of the female – in ancient times kings and rulers in old civilizations wore long necklaces decorated with jumbo pearls to flaunt their wealth and power.

The pearl is the birthstone for those born in June and this gem is compared to the gentle moon. Pearl necklaces may be of two types – the pearl necklace that is fashioned out of natural pearls and the pearl necklace crafted from artificial pearls or pearls that have been carefully farmed and harvested by man.

The passion for necklaces continues from ancient times to modern days without a break. No dress was complete without a necklace. The Egyptians and Israelites as well as the Greeks and Romans wore necklaces thickly set with priceless gems.

India was the fabled land of pearls and gems. So too was China. Pearl necklaces have been part of the dress code for thousands and thousands of years. Currently there are both traditional and modern designs to choose from.

The Choker pearl necklace consists of bands of pearls that closely hugs or chokes the neck reaching just up to its base. The Princess pearl necklace is about 18” to 20” long and ranks between a Choker and a Matinee pearl necklace. The Matinee pearl necklace dangles down 22” to 24”and ends at the top of the breasts.

The Opera pearl necklace may be anything from 30” to 36” long reaching up to the breast bone. The Rope pearl necklace or Sautoir is longer than the Opera. The Dog Collar consists of many strands of pearls that rest close to the neck. The Bid pearl necklace is made up of pearl strands arranged in steps. The Graduated pearl necklace is a unique item with large pearls in the middle gradually being flanked by smaller ones reaching up to the clasp at the back of the neck.

The Uniform Pearl necklace sports pearls of the uniform same size – at least gives that impression. Pearls may be either from fresh or sea water. When any irritant enters the clam they secrete a certain substance that surrounds it and finally hardens to form a pearl. To get this luxury thousands of sea creatures pay with their lives for they have been created to serve the aesthetic senses of Man.
