The silver pendants are made from silver that dates from the 16th or 17th centuries. Previous to this silver was available to only the chosen few – the royals and nobles. Later a new merchant class arose thanks to the mobility of ocean travel and soon they penetrated the exclusive club of silver users. Their silver items including the pendants are etched with tales of the sea.
For instance the rope motif of Gadroon (Georgian silver)remained with the merchants in their silver pendants and other articles long after they had forgotten sea voyages. The shell motif common in George III collections also came from the sea.
In days of yore the silversmith was patronized either by the royals, nobles or the church. With time and the coming of social revolution the silversmith became an important figure in society by his own right.
