Regardless, a sari or saree is basically a rectangular piece of cloth measuring five to nine yards in length.
Saris also come in three basic weaves, namely plain, twill and satin. Yet another method of weaving is gauze weaving, which produces a gossamer-like fabric.
All saris, including fancy sarees, may be worn in several ways - Maharashtrian, Navvari, Gujarati, and Bengali among other styles. The way the sari is worn gives away the status, age, occupation, region and faith of a woman in India.
Even the most luxurious sari can look very run-of-the-mill if not worn properly, as much as the ordinary one can look like a million dollars. It is all about the draping.
On the other end of the spectrum, prospective women - at best - wears designer saris, not fancy sarees, to posh or formal functions. |
