They are those embellished with "yollu", which are vertical stripes with various embroideries and small patterns. For their entire exotic splendor, kaftans or ladies kaftans for that matter did not originate from India.
Historically the kaftan was a gift from Venetians to Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent back in the 16th century in Constantinople. This particular present had the signature of King Solomon on it.
Ottoman sultans esteem these garments more than women would to their ladies kaftans today. At that time, Topkapi Palace in Istanbul is rife with most splendid collections of these garments.
A number of them were precious so much so that they were esteemedas rewards to important dignitaries and successful conquerors.
Fabrics for kaftans are known to be sourced as far as India. Still others were procured from Venice, Genoa, Persia and China. For the most part they hail from Istanbul and Bursa, where this dress code is very much ion vogue. According to its characteristics, kaftans are any of velvet, aba, bürümcük, canfes, gatma, gezi, diba, hatayi, kutnu, kemha, seraser, serenk, zerbaft, tafta, and many others. Common colors include "China blue", "Turkish red", violet, saffron yellow, and "pismis ayva", which means cooked quincse. |
